Proof of Concept Initiative
Iowa State University has a Proof of Concept Initiative (POCI) to provide resources for innovative research and to help facilitate and accelerate commercialization. The POCI is under the leadership of the Office of Economic Development and Industry Relations and represents a collaboration among the ISU Research Park, the Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship, and the ISU Research Foundation. The POCI is built with the same goal of commercialization. These funding opportunities include:
- Regents Innovation Fund (RIF) for academic-industry partnerships -- Now accepting applications for FY19 RIF proposals
Prior to initiating the application process, applicants should contact the individual below to discuss their idea:
- Kris Johansen, firstname.lastname@example.org, 294-3208.
The process for obtaining POCI funding includes completing an application form; selected applicants will then be invited to make a formal 15 minute presentation to an evaluation panel regarding the request. Awards are typically $50,000. Projects must be complete within 6 months, and are eleigible for a second phase of $50,000. A copy of the evaluation form can be found here.
Investigators who have an ownership stake or management role in their proposed RIF industry partner (e.g. a faculty startup company) should review the COI guidance document on participation in RIF projects here.
For more information on the general concept of the Proof of Concept Center, the Kauffman Foundation published a white paper that can be found here.
