ISU's Center For Advanced Technology Development

The Center for Advanced Technology Development at Iowa State University is a technology transfer center that focuses on commercializing new technologies and assisting Iowa companies with product development and process improvement challenges. To promote economic development within the state, CATD administers two funding/cost sharing programs - the Iowa Industrial Incentive Program (IIIP) and the Technology Commercialization Acceleration Program (TCAP) and provides assistance with small business innovative research (SBIR) and small business technology transfer program (STTR) grants.

Iowa Industrial Incentive Program
Funding is available through the Iowa Industrial Incentive Program (IIIP) to support collaborative research projects with Iowa companies. IIIP funds can be used to cover 25-50% of the total project costs. The upper limit of the IIIP program is approximately $15,000. To qualify for this program, the research project must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • The project should be an applied research and development effort in the area of product development, process improvement, or manufacturing problem solving;
  • The company must have fewer than 500 employees;
  • The company must have a substantial R&D or production operation in Iowa;
  • The company must contribute a cash match equivalent to 50-75% of the research costs;
  • The company must sign a contractual agreement with ISU covering the project;
  • The principal investigator must provide a proposal focused on the technical problem with a suggested scope of work, timeline, milestones, deliverables, and budget.

If you are working with a small Iowa company on a project that meets the above criteria, or would like more information about this program, please contact Kim Bentley at 4-5754 or kbentley@iastate.edu.

Technology Commercialization Acceleration Program
CATD has a long history of assisting entrepreneurial efforts in Iowa. These efforts may be university faculty, staff, or student start-up companies or early-stage companies that need research and engineering assistance with an improved product or process. TCAP funding can help "de-risk" a technology to move it from the laboratory to the commercial marketplace. Efforts are focused on:

  • Assessing technology with high commercial potential;
  • Identifying new products and market penetration strategies;
  • Engaging industrial partners for collaborative applied research and transfer projects.

CATD works closely with university units and state agencies to identify and engage university and corporate clients who have a desire to commercialize technologies and create new businesses in Iowa.

If you are an entrepreneur and would like to learn more about the TCAP program, please contact Carey Novak at (515) 294-2293 or cnovak@iastate.edu.

SBIR/STTR Assistance
SBIR/STTR grants are awarded to small businesses to promote innovative research. In addition to conducting training seminars on SBIR/STTR grant proposals, CATD provides small businesses and their university research partners with assistance in preparing and submitting grants to the SBIR/STTR grant programs.

If you would like to learn more about SBIR/STTR grants, please contact Barb Lograsso at (515) 294-9938 or lograsso@iastate.edu.
